Organising Your Wardrobe for the New Year

There is nothing better than starting the year feeling organised. Your wardrobe is something you use on a daily basis, so why wouldn’t you want to have the best storage possible for your clothes and your bedroom? In an ideal world, you should be able to find something in your wardrobe quickly and easily in the morning.

Here at Slide Wardrobes Direct, we offer a huge range of wardrobes – all made to measure, so you get exactly what you need for your space. From mirrored wardrobes to glass, to a classic wood finish, we have it all.

So, it’s time to start the year as you mean to go on, by using our top tips on how to organise your wardrobe.

Clean Out Your Wardrobe

This can sound like a long, boring task but if you create 3 piles it may not take as long as you think! Start by creating a pile for keeps, then a pile for donate or sell and finally a pile for the bin. The keep pile is self-explanatory, it will include everything you want to keep! The next pile is your donate or sell pile, but we understand it can be hard to decide whether to keep something or whether to donate it. So, how can you decide what you no longer need? A good rule is, if you haven’t worn an item in the last 6 months you should donate or sell it.

Why not sell some items to earn a little extra money? The second-hand clothing market’s popularity is ever-increasing and everyone loves a bargain! Apps like Vinted allow you to buy and sell clothes and get some extra cash for your much loved garments. However, if you do not have the time to sell your old clothes and they are in a wearable condition, you can donate them! This allows someone else to benefit from your old threads. Have some items you no longer wear and are not in good enough condition to sell or donate? They will go in your final pile, the bin pile.

Hang Everyday Wear

Hanging clothes that you wear on a daily basis is something that everybody needs to do. After all, the last thing you want while getting ready for work is to look around for your clothes. By planning ahead, you don’t need to look through piles of folded laundry, but simply take a quick glance across your wardrobe. If you can see everything in your wardrobe it makes it more convenient for you, helping you save some time!

It all comes down to preference, but there are a couple of things to bear in mind. When deciding what to hang, consider the item’s weight and fabric. Fabric that is more likely to crease would benefit from being hung. Whereas heavier items such as knitted jumpers would benefit from being folded to lessen the risk of them breaking the hangers. But try to fold as few clothes as possible! The more you fold the more likely you are only to use the top couple of folded clothes. Keep the clothes on your shelf space to a minimum.

Seasonal Wardrobe

Clothes in vacuum bags

One way to get the most out of your wardrobe space is to have a seasonal wardrobe. Simply only have the clothes you are wearing during that season (jumpers in winter, shorts in summer) out on display in your wardrobe. But what should I do with the clothes, not in season I hear you ask? The simplest way to store the clothes you know you won’t be wearing for a while is to fold them up and pack them into boxes, giving you more space in your wardrobe for the clothes you will be wearing for the next couple of months. If you have a shortage of space a great way to store out-of-season clothes would be in vacuum bags. The air inside the bags is sucked out making them less bulky and therefore easier to store in smaller places such as under your bed. Then simply swap your clothes over when the season changes so you have all of the clothes you will need out and ready to wear.

Have A System

There are a couple of options to consider when putting a system in place for your wardrobe. One option is to place all items of the same type together. So all your jeans would be in one section, jumpers in another and all your t-shirts would be together. Another option is to section your wardrobe into what you would wear the items for. For example, you would put all of your work clothes together, all of your going-out clothes and all of your everyday loungewear together. This is an excellent way to keep certain clothes for certain occasions and it will help you find certain items quicker as everything will be in its own designated section. If you have an open-plan wardrobe like a relaxed storage system you may think about a rainbow wardrobe system. Group all items of the same colours together and order them in the same order as a rainbow. It’s not one of the most practical systems but it will look great in your home!

There is no right or wrong way to organise your wardrobe. Do what suits you and your everyday needs. If a system makes it easier for you to find what you’re looking for then stick to it!
